Published: 30 Jul 2024
The Northern Territory Government, represented by the Minister Uibo and leaders from the Djalkiripuyŋu subregion of East Arnhem Land (also known as Blue Mud Bay) has signed the Djalkiripuyŋu Telecommunications Implementation Plan on 30 July 2024 at the celebration of the 16th anniversary of sea rights in the Northern Territory.
This Implementation Plan (IP) marks the first IP to be signed under the Djalkiripuyŋu LDM Agreement.
Connectivity and reliable communications are a significant challenge for the Djalkiripuyŋu homelands in realising Djalkiripuyŋu leader’s vision for thriving homelands.
The IP confirms three negotiated and secured projects for the larger Djalkiripuyŋu homelands and confirms the NT Government will work to secure projects for the other Djalkiripuyŋu homelands.
Under the Telecommunications IP NT Government will support broader consultations with Djalkiripuynu leaders to understand aspirations and needs for telecommunication services in smaller homelands; work with DAC, LHAC and telecommunication providers to support delivery of identified telecommunications projects for the Bäniyala, Gängan and Wandawuy homelands; and work with DAC and LHAC to develop a sustainable model of connectivity for smaller homelands.
The Agreement includes $150,000 of capacity building funding for DAC and $1.5 million to seed enabling infrastructure projects to support the creation of new jobs and business development on country.
