Groote Archipelago Local Decision Making Agreement

Published: 15 Nov 2018

The NT Government is empowering remote communities with the signing of a Local Decision Making Agreement in Groote Eylandt on 15 November 2018.

The NT Government signed a nine-year Agreement with the Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) to progress Local Decision Making in priority transition areas as identified by the ALC.

The Groote Archipelago Local Decision Making Agreement identifies short, medium and long term priorities for transition to regional and local control and sets out timeframes and processes to settle detailed implementation plans for each service transition.

The Agreement will provide a platform, potentially strengthened by any treaty entered into during this time, for the Anindilyakwa people to:

  • transition to community control agreed service delivery areas that are the responsibility of the NT Government
  • develop and prosper according to their views and needs for the future of their children and grandchildren
  • have enhanced relations with the NT Government which are harmonious and cooperative.
